My Story

I began my career as an actor in touring and repertory theatre. For over a decade I toured theatres nationally, and internationally, performing in front of audiences of hundreds, even thousands, month in, month out, year in, year out. You wouldn’t have known it from the stages I stood on, or through the workshops I led, but I was nervous... no, not nervous – afraid... no – terrified! The kind of fear where you can taste the adrenaline in your mouth, where your leg shakes and your eye twitches and you’re full of deep regret.

I remember one performance, in front of an audience of 5000, where I had to jump on a desk and sing acapella. I’m not a confident singer at the best of times. I honestly couldn’t feel my legs.

 It went fine.

It went great, actually. In fact, it pretty much always went well, even though it wasn’t easy. My work as a public speaking coach is about why it went well despite the nerves.

I am a trained actor with a great deal of experience. I know how to connect with an audience; to read the room and draw people in. But mostly, I know what it is to truly feel the nerves. My life’s work has been a lesson in overcoming this. I have applied and honed every single skill I could find in my toolbox to overcome that fear, to walk out on that stage and deliver well.

As a coach I teach the best of these skills and disciplines, translating technique into bite-sized exercises that you can apply to any public speaking situation. I have learned that you cannot wait to feel better. Confidence is something we choose to be, choose to take.
